Nisyros Volcanic Island: A Geosite through a Tailored GIS Story

The volcanic island of Nisyros (Greece) is here presented as it presents unique characteristics being a Quaternary volcano in the eastern Aegean Sea, composed rocks, and featuring central caldera that surrounded by domes thick lavas. Its history strongly connected to impressing visitors with steaming hydrothermal craters, intensive smell sulfur fumarolic gases, hot springs. Due its morphology geographical position, cultural historical heritage has been unchanged time, bequeath plenty churches, monasteries hagiographic frescoes, castles, caves, spas. To present geodiversity, environment, biodiversity this geosite, relatively new geographic approach was used, ESRI Story Maps. Being web-based applications, they are widespread an interactive responsive tool used for spatial data communication dissemination, combining thematic 2D 3D webmaps, narrative text, multimedia content. Such applications can be ideal way presenting available information places characterized geosites or protected areas worldwide, providing quick access broader, non-technical audience, developing interest, possibly motivating public learn more visit them.
